6 percent think transgender operations should be illegal

AUGUST 2010

The UK’s fastest/ growing Cosmetic Surgery/ review website has commissioned a poll to discover the opinions Brits have towards ‘controversial’ Cosmetic Surgery/ procedures such as transgender operations, Hymenorrhaphy and skin bleaching.

 A new study by the UK’s fastest/ growing Cosmetic Surgery/ review website has revealed that almost 6% of respondents think that transgender operations should be made illegal and a further 16% find the procedure ‘disturbing’.

The research was commissioned by www.goodsurgeonguide.co.uk in the hope of discovering the opinions and views of members of the British public towards more ‘controversial’ cosmetic procedures such as transgender operations, Hymenorrhaphy and skin bleaching.

The results revealed that 18% of the 1,216 people polled believed that skin bleaching is a ‘disgusting’ thing to do if it is undergone for vanity reasons. However, none of the respondents disagreed with the procedure if it was to be conducted for health reasons.

 When asked the multiple-choice question ‘why do you disagree with this procedure?’ 21% disagree with skin bleaching because it is ‘against nature’ while 14% felt the procedure is ‘racist’ and 11% claimed it is ‘harmful’.

 Of the 6% that believe transgender operations should be illegal, 1 in 5, 19% think it is ‘playing God’ and a further 23% agreed that transgender operations should be against the law because it is ‘wrong’.

 When asked about Hymenorrhaphy, an operation that replaces the hymen and therefore making the woman as if she were a virgin again, 14% cited that they can ‘understand’ women undergoing the procedure if it is for ‘religious’ reasons.

 In contrast, 8% agreed that a Hymenorrhaphy is ‘not a significant’ operation while 12% think it is ‘pointless’ and 17% believe it is a ‘waste of money’.

 Christiana Clogg, founder of The Good Surgeon Guide had the following to say about the findings;

 “These results really shocked me; I wasn’t prepared for people to have such strong feelings towards certain procedures. Surly if a procedure doesn’t directly affect you, an individual doesn’t need to have such strong opinions.”

She continued,

 “No matter what the procedure, from Botox to transgender operations, people should research all areas. An individual needs to be 100% certain about the procedure; surgery isn’t something that should be taken lightly. The Good Surgeon Guide isn’t for or against Cosmetic Surgery/, it is simply about spreading awareness of procedures and enforcing the need to know all there is to know about the cosmetic procedure that is being undertaken.”
