is the reduction of breast size by removing the fat and tissue around the breast area, and the repositioning of the nipple and areola.
What should I expect?
Because having a breast reduction is a surgical procedure, your surgeon will discuss alternative and non-surgical alternatives to make sure that having a breast reduction is right for you.
Should you opt for a breast reduction, you will be expected to stay overnight in hospital after the operation to rest and be monitored. The operation itself should last between2-4hours and usually takes place under general anaesthetic.
The operation is fairly simple, involving your surgeon making an incision from around the areola, down to the natural crease under the breast. Through this incision, the surgeon will then remove the excess skin and tissue, reducing your breast to the intended size, and then the nipple and areola is repositioned. The skin on the sides of the breast or breasts are then pulled together, creating the new breast shape, and the incision is closed using sutures.
In cases where the breast size is being dramatically decreased, the nipple and areola will be completely removed and then repositioned, but for many cases the nipples will remain attached to the blood vessels and nerves, retaining sensitivity in the nipple.
After the operation, you will be expected to take 2 weeks of work to rest and recover, and you will wear a dressing followed by a supportive bra to allow your breasts to recover. The sutures used to close the incision will be removed from 1-2 weeks after the operation, and you will instructed to keep your breasts and incisions out of the sun for 12 months.
What are the risks?
As with any surgical procedure, breast reduction surgery comes with potential risks that your good surgeon should discuss with you before you go ahead with this procedure. You surgeon should discuss the following potential risks and side-effects:
•
Scarring • Bruising and swelling • Puckering around scar area • Asymmetrical breasts and/or nipples • Permanent nipple loss • Loss of nipple sensation • Unable to breast feed
And finally...
Your doctor should discuss with you alternative methods of reducing breast size before you decide to opt for breast reduction surgery. For instance, being over-weight could mean extra fatty deposits in your breast which can be lost through dieting and exercise.
Also, discussing the reasons for having a breast reduction with your doctor could expose purely psychological reasons, which could be treated through psychotherapy, so it is important to be sure that having a breast reduction is the right choice for you.
