Gum contouring or gum reshaping, is a dental treatment carried out for cosmetic reasons to improve a persons smile. Many people suffer from the common problem caused by overgrowth of the gum tissue which covers the teeth, the results are known as the “gummy smile” as too much gum tissue may be showing when they smile. The cause of this problem can be from a number of things, heredity, health conditions, or even just high blood pressure medications.
A gummy smile can visually make the teeth look crooked, uneven or make the teeth appear smaller than the gums. Cosmetic gum lifting or gum contouring is a procedure developed to combat this problem by removing the excess gum tissue around the teeth.
Gum contouring procedure
The Gum contouring procedure is most commonly performed with use of a scalpel. However, technological advances have now seen special laser devices emerging in the treatment of gum lifting. A local anaesthetic is applied to the gums and the scalpel or laser is used to trim away the excess gum tissue and redefine the gums where they meet the teeth. The advantage of the laser is that it seals the blood vessels in the gums, the cuts are sterilised and therefore will heal much faster than if they were cut with a scalpel.
Gum Contouring Risks
The majority of Gum contouring treatments are performed both safely and effectively, the risks that can occur will be if there has been too much gum tissue is removed. If this is the case then the mouth may have problems healing, swelling may occur and an additional treatment may be required to correct it.
