Details about Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding

Laparoscopy is an operation performed in the abdomen or pelvis through small incisions with the aid of a camera. It can either be used to inspect and diagnose a condition or to perform surgery. This type of procedure can be better for patients unwilling to have full open surgery, because this is a minimally invasive procedure.

An adjustable gastric band is a circular balloon, similar to inner tube you find inside a bicycle tyre, which is placed around the upper part of your stomach. The band is then inflated through a port which is placed just under the skin. This creates a pouch of stomach above the band. When you eat, the pouch fills up quickly and the food then passes slowly through the narrow opening created by the band, into the lower part of your stomach. The food then travels normally through the rest of your digestive system.
