Details about Laser eye surgery

It is becoming increasingly popular to opt for laser eye surgery so that you no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses, it however cannot be used to tackle sight loss related to the ageing process. Laser eye surgery is a simple outpatient procedure which is carried out whilst you are awake with some local anaesthetic like you are given to numb your mouth at the dentist. • The coloured part of our eyes is covered by a clear layer called the cornea; this is exposed by making a small incision. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea. • The optimum curvature of the cornea is when light rays hitting the eye land directly on the retina at the back of the eye where they will be processed. Dependant on whether you are long or short sighted the laser will either flatten or increase the curvature of the cornea to improve your sight. Although many NHS hospitals have surgeries to perform the procedure in, it is a private procedure and will cost you around £1000 to £1500 per eye . Both eyes can be done on the same day and recovery time is fast, although for the first 3 months you are required to wear UV glasses when out in the sun to protect your eyes.
