Laser skin resurfacing is used to remove top layers of damaged and wrinkled skin, revealing a younger and more youthful appearance. Deep laugh and frown creases can be softened, some acne and surgical scars can be minimised, fine lines around the eyes and mouth can be smoothed. The laser can also be used in conjunction with face lifts and eyelid surgery to smooth any fine lines that would normally remain.
As the laser beam is used, it feels like an elastic band hitting the skin. The laser vaporises the upper skin layers, which allows the skin to regenerate in a more organised fashion to produce a softer, less wrinkled surface.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and can last from a few seconds up to a few hours depending on the size and area of skin being treated.
There will be an initial redness which will fade in a few weeks to light pink, this is easily camouflaged with cosmetics and usually disappears completely in one to three months. Some swelling may occur; there may be a change in skin pigmentation in treated areas however this is very uncommon
