Details about Lipoma removal

Lipomas are non cancerous tumours made up of fatty tissue. They are found beneath the skin and are soft, moveable and painless, they can vary greatly in size. • Some researchers believe that they can turn cancerous over time but this has yet to be proven. They can form at any age but between 40 and 60 years of age is most common. Lipomas can appear anywhere on the body but the most common places are the neck, back and arms. • Currently lipomas are not normally treated as it’s not believed to pose any health risk to the patient, however if the lipoma becomes painful or becomes infected, indicated by a strong smell, it will be removed. • Many people also opt to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Removal is a straightforward process requiring just a local anaesthetic if it is not too deep in the skin. • A small incision is made and then the lipoma can easily be removed. If the lipoma is located deeply in the skin a general anaesthetic may be required, also if a patient is having multiple lipomas removed a general anaesthetic may be used. Lipoma removal is usually a cosmetic procedure so you will have to pay for the procedure
