10% of all cancers in women occur in the breast. Most women if possible like to retain their breast, therefore if possible a lumpectomy will be performed. • A lumpectomy is a form of breast conservation surgery, the tumour and a small amount of healthy surrounding tissue will be removed unlike in a mastectomy where the whole breast is removed. • The amount of breast which needs removing depends on the size of the tumour. • After a lumpectomy a series of radiotherapy sessions is usually required. These sessions will eliminate any cancer cells that still remains breast tissue. • A lumpectomy is a scary procedure for both the women and her family but the medical team will try their up most to put everyone at ease. Marks may be made on your skin with a felt tip pen to show the surgeon where to make the incisions. • Then after you have been given a local anaesthetic the surgeon will use an electric scalpel with heat, to minimise bleeding, and remove the lump. The surgeon will use curved incisions to try and reduce scarring. You should be allowed to return home the same day.
