Details about Mastectomy

Unfortunately may women have experienced breast cancer either themselves or in their family. When it’s diagnosed, breast cancer treatment will usually mean that all or part of the breast will be removed to try and stop the cancer spreading. A mastectomy is the removal of the whole breast, some skin and the nipple. Where there is a large incidence of breast cancer in a family a mastectomy may also be performed as a prevention procedure rather than a treatment. • If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes under your armpit these will also be removed at the same time. The lymph system is an easy route for the spread of cancer around the body leading to secondary tumours. • A mastectomy requires a general anaesthetic, this means that 6 hours of fasting will be required before the surgery can begin. • The surgeons will then cut diagonally across the breast and remove the tissue before sewing the skin back over the breast area. The procedure takes one or two hours to complete. Many women opt for reconstruction surgery at the same time. • A plastic surgeon will build backup the breast area to match your other breast. Otherwise inserts can be fitted to be worn in your bra. Following a mastectomy procedure you will have a short stay in hospital, generally up to 10 days.
