Details about Melasma

A melasma is a tanned or darkened area of skin discolouration. Melasmas are commonly associated with pregnant women and those on either the oral contraceptive or contraceptive patch. • However men can also have melasmas, it is more common in some ethnic groups than others. Unfortunately melasmas don’t present as a darker tan all over the body, instead they present as dark irregular patches which develop over time. • They often appear symmetrically on both sides of the body and are most often found on the upper cheek, nose, lips or forehead. • Although melasmas are unsightly to look at and can be embarrassing there are no associated medical risks. • If the melasma is due to pregnancy it should fade a few months after giving birth. Similarly if it is due to contraceptives, if the usage of the medicine is stopped within a few months it will fade. • There are some treatments that can speed up the disappearance, these are generally applied to the area of concern. Most women are able to cover up any melasmas with makeup. If you are pregnant the alternative name for a melasma is a pregnancy mask.
