Mini Liposuction is the removal of excess fat from areas of the body where it persists despite of exercising and diet. Suitable areas are a double chin, 'love handles' around the waist, tummy, inner thighs or knees, 'saddle bags' at the outer thighs, or the inner surface of the upper arms.
In contrast with conventional liposuction, mini liposuction requires only local anaesthesia, has fewer complications, is better tolerated by patients, and has a shorter recovery time as only a small amount of fat is extracted at a time varying from 100-500 ml.
How is the procedure carried out?
A small canula - attached to a suction machine - is inserted through a keyhole incision. A plastic surgeon then moves the canula into the target area, creatiing multiple small tunnels in the fat from where it is dislodged and sucked out. The collected fat can also be injected into areas of tissue deficit, which is called a fat transfer. The whole procedure should take one hour.
What are the complications in a Mini Liposuction?
A mini liposuction is said to be suitable for obese. It is further unsuitable for people suffering from an active infection, immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, malignancies, psychiatric conditions or those prone to excessive bleeding or scarring. It is also unsuitable for people who are pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are allergic to any components of sutures or local anaesthetic. People using anticoagulation should consult their doctor and, if possible, stop their medication 3 days prior to the operation.
What Are Side Effects?
While swelling settles after 48 hours, bruising is common but normally disappears within 10 days. Infection is rare and may require antibiotics; damage to a nerve or a blood vessel is extreamely rare; numbness of the overlying skin is common but improves over a few weeks. Any loose skin or uneven surfaces take longer to recover, usually up to 2-3 months.
