Details about Photodynamic Therapy

Unfortunately cancer is a very real risk to us all; most people will know someone that has been struck with cancer at some point in their lives. Photodynamic therapy may be used to treat cancer and also other conditions of the skin. • Photodynamic therapy uses a mixture of a laser and drugs. A photosensitising drug is given to the patient, often as a cream if you are been treated for skin cancer otherwise it may be injected or given orally. • The drug makes cells more sensitive to light, once in the body it is attracted to the cancer cells where it lays dormant until activated by a light source. • The laser will then be directed at the cancer cells, this will activate the drug which is now with the cancer cells and destroy the cancerous cells. • Other healthy cells may also be affected by the treatment but these should be able to heal naturally afterwards. • Photodynamic therapy may be used as a treatment to cure you or if the cancer is already very advanced it may be used to make the tumour smaller, this should lengthen you life expectancy and give you more time to prepare for your death. Photodynamic therapy is often used to treat Bowen’s disease which is a pre cancerous skin condition.
