Plastic surgery is a major surgical procedure that reshapes part of the body or restores function in parts of the body. Plastic surgery may be carried out for reconstruction purposes in situations where a body parts has been lost or badly damaged or it may be carried out as a cosmetic procedure, either to enhance part of the body or to try and reverse the ageing process. • Reconstructive plastic surgery is used to fix congenital abnormalities, such as cleft lip, correct functional impairments, for example caused by trauma or to correct developmental abnormalities. • It is also regularly used when a cancerous tumour is removed for example in the breast. • Cosmetic surgery, which is particularly popular in the United Kingdom, is a multi million business, there are procedures on all parts of the body, you can enhance, reduce, change or maintain a younger look. • Examples of plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons include lip augmentation, breast enlargement and nose jobs. Plastic surgery is particularly popular amongst the celebrities usually performed to either enhance their image above the normal level or to try and reverse any signs of ageing.
