Varicose veins often very unsightly, usually found on the leg, which get bigger as the valves no longer close, so blood build-ups in the veins • Varicose veins can also be painful and may become infected and ulcers may form as they are often very itchy. Polidocanol is an irritant which is injected to reduce varicose veins. • Polidocanol damages the inside of the blood vessels, this causes the blood vessel to close and it will eventually be replaced by another type of tissue, this reduces the appearance of the vein. • Polidocanol is approved by the FDA for the treatment of varicose veins up to 3mm in width therefore it is not recommended for the treatment of large varicose veins, surgery to remove the veins may be the only option for larger ones. • Common adverse reactions to polidocanol include leakage and collection of blood from damaged blood vessels, there may also be irritation, bruising and discolouration at the injection site but this should fade with time.
