Details about PRK

PRK which is Photorefractive keratectomy is a laser treatment which is used to correct a person’s vision. Following PRK the patient should no longer have to rely on glasses or contact lenses. • The process of PRK is gradual whereas LASIK laser eye surgery is quicker, but PRK is recommended for some patients particularly those with a thin cornea. • A laser is used to remove small bits of tissue from the cornea in order to reshape it so that light is directed onto the retina at the back of the eye. • If you are short sighted, the cornea is too steep, so the laser is used to flatten it, whereas in long sighted people a steeper cornea is required to perfect the patients vision. • The procedure itself only takes a few minutes and you are free to leave the clinic following a small rest, although you should not drive. • Anaesthetic drops will be applied to the eye and occassionally an oral sedative will be given to the patient if they are particularly nervous. The surgeon then controls the laser using a computer and the tissue is removed. You can have both eyes done at once but most people choose to wait a week or two inbetween.
