Details about Pulsed dye laser

Birthmarks can be a nuisance particularly if they are on a part of your body that is regularly displayed. Pulsed dye laser can remove red birthmarks and some other skin marks. The marks are caused by small blood vessels on the skin which have grown in size or number. A laser is used to send a yellow beam of light onto the skin, the light is absorbed by blood vessels just beneath the skin, this causes them to be destroyed. A bruise will temporarily be seen in the birthmarks place but this will fade in a few weeks. The area will be kept cool during the treatment and this will help prevent any pain but an anaesthetic will also be required as, as the laser is fired pain will be felt otherwise. The redness may not disappear completely following the treatment but it will definetly be lighter and therefore less obvious. More than one treatment may be required generally spaced 8 weeks apart. Following laser treatment the skin is more susceptible to sunlight so it is important to wear high factor sun creams or you are likely to burn. As with many other treatments that use a laser there is a risk of skin discolouration which will be more obvious on darker skinned people.
