Revision surgery can mean a number of things. Many people as they get older require hip replacements but as time goes by the hip replacements also wear out this can be due to looseness or infection. If a hip replacement is replaced it is known as revision hip replacement surgery. • This can be complicated depending on the quality of the bone. Another example of revision surgery is the replacement of a knee implant. • Then either parts or the whole implant will need to be replaced. Revision surgery is much more complex and more technically difficult than first time surgery and requires long operating periods. The two examples listed above were performed for medical reasons, but revision surgery can also be required after cosmetic procedures. • Some nose jobs require revision surgeries to correct problems that develop after or continue after the first nose job. Revision rhinoplasty is often more difficult as the nose is filled with scar tissue making it more difficult to separate the tissues and reposition the bones. Another cosmetic surgery which often requires revision surgery is breast enlargement. This is either performed because the implants need replacing as they wear out or because the patient is not happy with the result.
