Salicylic acid peels are commonly used to treat acne, fine wrinkles, minor skin discolouration and sun damage. Salicylic acid peels may be performed at home or you may wish to have a professional carry out the treatment.
• The procedure is simple, firstly determine how deep you want your peel to go. Salicylic acid peels are available in concentrations up to 30 percent, but lesser concentrations can be purchased.
• If you have more serious skin issues that you are hoping to solve a stronger concentration is recommended. Apply the salicylic acid to your skin and leave it sitting there for 10 to 20 minutes; you may feel a slight tingling of the skin during this stage.
• The peel will exfoliate your skin. Usually between 6 and 10 treatments are required but it does depend on your individual skin condition.
• The skin may appear red and shiny immediately after the peel this is because the top of the skin has been removed. Unfortunately a salicylic peel is only recommended for individuals with pale skin as it can cause skin discolouration.
After using a salicylic acid peel your skin is more likely to burn so it is important to wear a sun cream with a high factor to protect the skin.
