Details about Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins can form when the valves in the veins no longer close properly, therefore the veins become enlarged as blood builds up in them. Sclerotherapy can be used to treat varicose veins. Using an ultrasound to monitor the veins a surgeon will inject a sclerosing substance into the vein. The sclerosing substance which is injected into the vein causes the vein to shrink immediately and then dissolve into the body over the next few weeks. Numerous injections will be required and the patient will then be asked to wear a compression bandage over the next two weeks, it is also recommended over this period that the patient walks regularly. Another treatment will then be carried out several weeks later. If the sclerosant is injected properly into the vein, there is no damage to the surrounding skin, but if it is injected outside the vein, tissue necrosis, which is tissue death and scarring can result.
