If sedation is been performed another member of the dental team will be present in the dental surgery as well as the dentist, this is for medico legal reasons as there is a risk of hallucinations, your heart rate and blood pressure will be also monitored carefully. The sedative medicine is often injected into your arm at the bend of your elbow or otherwise into the back of your hand, you will feel sleepy but are able to follow instructions from the dentist. Sedation is not however recommended for pregnant women or the elderly. For patients, it can mean freedom from anxiety or fear during dental procedures. In cases where a patient has not been able to undergo dental treatment for many years because of this fear, sedation dentistry allows them to have several years worth of dental treatment in just a few sessions. Not all dentists are trained to perform sedation dentistry.
