Throughout life the collagen in the skin breaks down, this leads to a loss of elasticity and volume, as a result of this the skin sags, becomes loose and wrinkles form. Silicone injections are a type of filler similar to Botox, but they are longer lasting and there is less chance of negative reactions. Tiny droplets of silicone oil droplets are injected at multiple points under the skin. This stimulates fibroblasts, fibroblasts are the cells that form new collagen. The new collagen grows around the silicone droplets. More injections are subsequently administered over time which triggers the production of yet more new collagen. The collagen encapsulated silicone gradually fills in the wrinkles in the skin. After each treatment you will see the results as the wrinkles are gradually filled in, the number of treatments that you require will therefore depend on the depth of your wrinkles. The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic so that no pain is felt. Following the treatment the area will appear red and swollen for a few days.
