Sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces in the skull bones behind your face. Your sinuses are connected to your nose and have mucous membrane which produces mucus to keep the area moist. • Excess mucus normally drains out of the sinuses and down the back of your throat. If the sinus lining becomes inflamed as in sinusitis the mucus can't drain in the normal way. You may develop symptoms like a headache and blocked nose. • In sinus surgery diseased sinus tissue will be precisely removed usually with the use of cameras so that external incisions in the skin are not required. A camera will be placed up your nose as will the instruments that are required. • A pathway will be created so that the infected material can drain from the sinus cavities. Sinus surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. The post operative care following sinus surergy is extremely important, if the procedure is likely to fail it is generally at this point. After surgery your nose may feel blocked and drops of liquid containing blood may drip from your nose, try and avoid blowing it for the first 48 hours. The surgeon may decide to give your sinuses a little spring clean too – by draining.
