Details about Skin cancer

There are many different types of skin cancer. Melanoma forms in the cells that form melanocytes which produce the pigment in the skin, basal cell carcinoma is in the cells in the outer layer of the skin, squamous cell carcinoma affects the cells that form the surface of the skin and neuroendocrine carcinoma is cancer of the cells that release hormones in the skin. Skin cancer is rarely fatal it is generally obvious to spot tumours which are on the skin, it can however be severly disfiguring. Basal cell carcinomas are present on sun-exposed areas of the skin, especially the face. They rarely metastasize and rarely cause death. They are easily treated with surgery or radiation. Melanomas are the least frquent but they do regularly metastasize, once they do they are deadly. Skin cancers are usually caused by UV rays, too many UV rays damage the skin, it is therefore extremely important to wear sun cream when outside to protect yourself from UV rays. If you experience skin that will not heal, ulcerations, discolouring of the skin or changes in mole shape it is important that you visit a doctor as these can all be signs of skin cancer. Radiation, Mohs surgery or chemotherapy will be considered for treatment dependent on the location, spread and age of the patient
