Uneven patches of colour on the skin either darker or lighter such as birthmarks can be embarrassing and lower a persons self esteem, skin lightening can be the answer to try and achieve a more even skin tone. Patches of skin which are darker or lighter than the surrounding areas are due to the amount of melanin in the skin. • The more melanin that is present the darker the skin tone. Hyper pigmentation can also be caused by skin damage particularly in response to sunlight exposure these are called liver spots, even though they have nothing to do with the liver. There is more than one way to lighten the skin. • One method uses a combination of techniques; a lotion to inhibit melanin production, a sunscreen and a retinoid, this is a chemical which contains vitamin A. Exfoliating substances, laser treatments and LED treatments may also be used. • The results with laser treatments may not be consistent and laser treatments are not recommended for individuals with darker skin. Another alternative is cryosurgery this uses liquid nitrogen and causes controlled destruction of skin cells. This causes the skin to naturally regenerate itself and excess melanin comes to the surface and peels off in a few days
